WHEREAS, United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres said "on International Women’s Day, let us all pledge to do everything we can to overcome entrenched prejudice, support engagement and activism, and promote gender equality and women’s empowerment”; and

WHEREAS, in 1975, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day and in 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the United Nations Day for women's rights and world peace; and

WHEREAS, as International Women’s Day is observed around the world, we are not only given an opportunity to reflect upon the progress made to advance women’s equality, celebrate the gains made by women in our society, and recommit ourselves to achieving a world in which women can enjoy gender equality; and

WHEREAS, the 2021 theme for International Women’s Day is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.” The theme celebrates and recognizes the efforts made by women around the world to help create a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic; and

WHEREAS, for over ninety years, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is the leading forum to ensure that the Pittsburgh region has a dynamic international presence. The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is committed to informing opinion leaders and decision-makers about developments around the world as they unfold - and to educating them about the relevance of such developments to the region.
