Proclamation celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Century Heritage Federal Credit Union.

WHEREAS, credit unions are member-owned, independent, not-for-profit cooperatives founded by people working together towards economic advancement, uniting people seeking a way to improve their future; and
WHEREAS, credit unions call for the pooling of personal resources and leadership abilities for the good of the cooperative. Today, credit unions serve nearly 84 million members nationwide, with deposits exceeding $600 billion and loans over $400 billion in more than 9,500 federally insured credit unions; and
WHEREAS, forty employees of the Duquesne Works mill of U.S. Steel pooled $240 of their savings and applied to the federal government for a credit union charter. They received approval of their charter request and began operations on June 10, 1936 as the Century Heritage Federal Credit Union, headquartered in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, today, Century Heritage FCU serves close to 14,000 members from 33 communities in the Mon-Yough area of Allegheny County; and
WHEREAS, Century Heritage FCU prides itself on offering members the best rates on common financial products and stresses financial education, providing materials and holding seminars on financial planning, car and home buying, retirement, insurance and investment services to help members achieve their financial goals for themselves and their families; and
WHEREAS, on September 16, 2006, Century Heritage Federal Credit Union will celebrate their 70th Anniversary at the 4th Annual Family Community Picnic at Kennywood Park;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby join in celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Century Heritage Federal Credit Union. This Council encourages all citizens to join in recognizing the many contributions that credit unions have made to the communities in Allegheny County, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and across the nation.
