Proclamation recognizing “The Writing our Own Narrative” benefit reception and theatrical performance on Friday, April 8, 2016 at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, and thanking the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute Chapter for its steadfast commitment to social and economic justice.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI), a nonprofit organization, has upheld the values of civil rights, social and economic justice for all people since the chapter’s founding in 1968, and provides multiple services within the Pittsburgh community; and
WHEREAS, “The Writing our Own Narrative,” a benefit reception and theatrical performance on Friday, April 8, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. will be hosted by United Steelworkers (USW) International President, Leo W. Gerard, at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District; and
WHEREAS, an autobiographical one-man play, titled, “Rodney King” will be performed by Obie award-winning actor Roger G. Smith, and will support the Pittsburgh APRI Chapter’s ‘Breaking the Chains of Poverty’ (BTCP) program; and
WHEREAS, in collaboration with the United Steelworkers, the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, and GTECH Strategies, the innovative BTCP program offers extensive and up-to-date construction and building training as well as green technology training to underserved individuals; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the program is to replace long-term unemployment and underemployment with entry-level placement into family-sustaining jobs, develop a leadership pipeline among residents in support of investment in the green economy and to give community members the tools to more successfully compete in the workplace;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Pittsburgh A. Philip Randolph Institute Chapter on this occasion which is taking place as part of the APRI Northeast Regional Conference, and this Council recognizes the Pittsburgh APRI Chapter’s steadfast commitment to social and economic justice benefiting the communities within Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
