Proclamation recognizing The Coalition of Labor Union Women- Pittsburgh Chapter's Man of the Year, Jack Shea, and Woman of the Year, Jean Friday.

WHEREAS, on April 7, 2008, local residents Jack Shea and Jean Friday will be named the 2008 Labor Man of the Year and 2008 Labor Woman of the Year by The Coalition of Labor Union Women, Pittsburgh Chapter; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Shea and Ms. Friday are being recognized for their complete commitment and dedication to advancing the initiatives of the Organized Labor community in Allegheny County and the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, and for their tireless pursuit of fairness and decent living wages for those working women and men in our communities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Shea spent nearly 30 years working with the IUE, serving in various capacities that included the International Staff, Director of District 1, and Assistant Organizing Director. Since 1985, Mr. Shea has been involved with the Allegheny County Labor Council, working in a variety of positions that have led up to his current position as President of the ACLC. Mr. Shea has also been heavily involved with Allegheny County through the years, serving on multiple boards and committees, including the Board of Directors for the PA Workforce Investment Board, the ALCOSAN Board, the UPMC Health System Board of Directors, and the Advisory Committee to Enhance Efficiency and Effectiveness for County and City Government; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Friday made a name for herself in 1964 when she became the first female Quality Control Technician in the Salary Laboratory at the US Steel Clairton Coke Works. Since her 1989 retirement, she has served on several boards and committees, including President of SOAR Chapter 13-15, US Steel Clairton Coke Works, USW District 10 SOAR Coordinator, National Executive SOAR Board Member for USW District 10, President of the PA Alliance for Retired Americans, and Executive Board Member of the Alliance for Retired Americans. Ms. Friday has also been active in a number of other state and local associations including the Mon Valley Council on Aging, the Allegheny County AFL-CIO Retiree Council Executive Board, the PA AARP Prescription Drug Task Force, and the Home Owner's Association;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council joins with The Coalition of Labor Union Women, Pittsburgh Chapter, in recognizing and congratulating Jack Shea and Jean Friday for being named the 2008 Labor Man of the Year and 2008 Labor Woman of the Year. Their commitment to the hard working men and women of Allegheny County is commendable, and we thank them for all that they have done and all that they continue to do.
