Proclamation recognizing the Pittsburgh Curling Club as host of the international 2006 TropiCurl Island Summer Bonspiel and thanking them for bringing the sport of curling to Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, established in 2002, the Pittsburgh Curling Club is a non-profit organization made up entirely of volunteers dedicated to growing the sport of curling in Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, areas. The Club operates out of Robert Morris University's Island Sports Center, a state-of-the-art sports facility located on Neville Island in Neville Township, Allegheny County; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Curling Club is one of only two curling clubs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with the other located in Philadelphia. The Pittsburgh Curling Club's membership has steadily grown over the past 4 years, last season ranking 16th out of 37 clubs in the Grand National Curling Club; and
WHEREAS, the 2006 Winter Olympics, in Torino, Italy, generated enthusiasm and an overwhelming interest in the sport of curling. During this time the Pittsburgh Curling Club received over 100,000 hits per week on its website, www.pittsburghcurlingclub.com <http://www.pittsburghcurlingclub.com>. In response to the public demand the Club added Learn to Curl sessions and league play in order to sign on new members and capitalize on this tremendous surge of interest; and
WHEREAS, from June 30 to July 2, 2006, the Pittsburgh Curling Club will host their first international Bonspiel competition called “TropiCurl Island Summer Bonspiel”, with 40 teams from the United States and Canada participating; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh holds a unique place on the map and in the hearts of the people who know it and few cities of any size can match what Pittsburgh has to offer. The downtown area makes it easy to walk from hotels to shops, theaters and restaurants. From arts and heritage to family fun and sports and recreation, Pittsburgh is a friendly city that's full of surprises and we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to explore our great city;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes the Pittsburgh Curling Club as host of the 2006 TropiCurl Island Summer Bonspiel and we welcome the participants and guests, which will bring vitality and excitement to our region. This Council expresses its sincere gratitude to the Pittsburgh Curling Club for bringing the sport of curling, a great game of strategy, to Allegheny County.
