body

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals and organizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods and the community as a whole; and

WHEREAS, The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania is a not-for-profit organization that expands the community capacity to support quality-mentoring relationships for youth; and

WHEREAS, The Mentoring Partnership (an affiliate of the National Mentoring Partnership) brings together community leaders and organizations that are eager to enhance quality mentoring by providing support and encouragement for our youth.  They work with businesses, community agencies, schools and faith-based organizations in order to create new mentoring programs, improve existing ones, help recruit and refer mentors to local organizations, and most importantly, to connect youth in need of mentors with quality mentoring programs; and

WHEREAS, The Mentoring Partnership focuses it's outreach in four areas:  community- based programs such as Beginnings with Books, Scouting and Big Brothers Big Sisters; faith-based mentoring - equipping local congregations to serve youth through ministry; school-based mentoring - focusing on academic achievement and work-based mentoring - bringing students to the workplace to learn about careers, post graduate opportunities as well as basic workplace skills; and

WHEREAS, Mentors are friends, teachers, and role models. They open doors of opportunity, convey values, and help provide the stability and encouragement that young people need to succeed. By spending time with a child and showing compassion and guidance, a mentor can profoundly affect a young life. Mentoring relationships create continuing cycles of hope and promise, as they not only provide positive influences for individual children, but also strengthen families and communities.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes and commends The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania upon their continued commitment to the youth of our community and recognizes the month of January 2005 as "National Mentoring Month" in Allegheny County.
