Proclamation recognizing and commending the Pittsburgh Board of Education for emphasizing the importance of a father's involvement in his children's education; and the adult males who participate in the “Take Your Father to School Day” event for recognizing and embracing their place in children's education.

WHEREAS, a father can be any adult male who has played a significant role in the life of a child, whether that person be an actual father, a grandfather, uncle, minister, guardian, brother, or any other adult male; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Education of the City of Pittsburgh has recognized and continues to recognize the importance of having an adult male in the life of a child through its sponsorship of the Sixth Annual “Take Your Father to School Day” and rally; and
WHEREAS, research has shown that parental involvement is crucial to a child's success in school; children with involved fathers do better in school than kids who have less connected dads; excelling not only in academics, but as strong social learners who are satisfied with school and their friends; and
WHEREAS, children whose fathers participate in classroom activities and school meetings and events have higher grades, enjoy school more, and are more likely to participate in extracurricular activities, regardless of whether that father lives with them; and
WHEREAS, unfortunately, nearly seventy percent (70%) of non-resident fathers and fifty percent (50%) of fathers in two-parent families are not involved in school-related activities and, even though the advantages of their involvement is most significant in grades six through twelve, that involvement decreases significantly as children grow older; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes and commends the Pittsburgh Board of Education for emphasizing the importance of a father's involvement in his children's education; and, more importantly, the adult males who participate in the “Take Your Father to School Day” event for recognizing and embracing their place in children's education.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby designates May 28, 2004 as “Take Your Father to School Day” in Allegheny County.
