An Ordinance of the County of Allegheny, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, establishing "Roberto Clemente Day" throughout Allegheny County on an annual basis.

                     WHEREAS, the legendary Roberto Clemente patrolled right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 - 1972 and in doing so lead the team to two World Series Championships while winning four National League batting titles, the 1966 National League Most Valuable Player Award, while compiling 3,000 hits and a lifetime batting average of .317 in his Hall of Fame career; and

 

                     WHEREAS, while he became one of the greatest players in baseball history, Clemente was an even greater individual off the field of play and made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life while providing humanitarian relief for his fellow man; and

 

                     WHEREAS, through his life, and in his death, Clemente became an inspiration to millions and a role model for children everywhere; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Clemente's legacy highlights and underscores the importance and benefits of Allegheny County's rich and diverse ethnic and racial heritage; and

 

                     WHEREAS, County Council finds that by honoring the memory of this great, brave and caring American and his contributions to society will signify the County's deep appreciation for Roberto Clemente's contributions to all of mankind and promote harmonious relations between and among the various ethnic and racial groups throughout the County.

 

The Council of the County of Allegheny hereby enacts as follows:

 

Section 1.                     Incorporation of the Preamble.

 

                     The provisions set forth in the preamble to this Ordinance are incorporated by reference in their entirety herein.

 

 

Section 2.                     Roberto Clemente Day Established.

 

A.                     It is hereby established and proclaimed that the Opening Day for the Pittsburgh Pirates 2008 home baseball schedule and every Opening Day thereafter shall be recognized and celebrated as Roberto Clemente Day throughout Allegheny County.

 

B.                     The proper persons and departments within the County, including the County Manager's Office and the Parks Department, are authorized and directed to work with the City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club, Major League Baseball, the Baseball Hall of Fame, the African American Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and any other appropriate organizations to develop activities and events to properly effectuate the intents and purposes of this Ordinance.

 

Section 3.                     Severability

 

If any provision of this Ordinance shall be determined to be unlawful, invalid, void or unenforceable, then that provision shall be considered severable from the remaining provisions of this Ordinance, which shall be in full force and effect.

 

Section 4.                     Repeals

 

                     Any Resolution or Ordinance or part thereof conflicting with the provisions of this Ordinance is hereby repealed so far as the same affects this Ordinance.
