A Resolution of the County of Allegheny, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, changing the name of the 9th Street Bridge within the City of Pittsburgh to the Rachel Carson Bridge.

WHEREAS, born and raised in Springdale, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1907, Rachel Carson was a well known scientist and naturalist; and
WHEREAS, Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring expressing concerns regarding government policy and the environment; and
WHEREAS, many credit Silent Spring with creating a greater appreciation of the effect of human activity on the environment and the interdependence of all living species; and
WHEREAS, Carson exhibited great courage, conviction and perseverance exposing the damages posed by the overuse and abuse of chemical pesticides; and
WHEREAS, many credit Rachel Carson for helping to launch a generation of environmental awareness and activism; and
WHEREAS, Rachel Carson's contributions are so great and unique that she was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County is home to the Rachel Carson Homestead which preserves this National Register historic site and offers education programs which advance Rachel Carson's environmental ethic; and
WHEREAS, the world-renowned Rachel Carson brings much notoriety and pride to this region and should be recognized in a more public manner;
The Council of the County of Allegheny hereby resolves as follows:
Section 1.
The 9th Street Bridge shall hereby officially be re-named the Rachel Carson Bridge in honor of the author and in recognition of her worldwide impact.
Section 2. Severability.
If any provision of this Resolution shall be determined to be unlawful, invalid, void or unenforceable, then that provision shall be considered severable from the remaining provisions of this Resolution which shall be in full force and effect.
Section 3. Repealer.
Any Resolution or Ordinance or part thereof conflicting with the provisions of this Resolution is hereby repealed so far as the same affects this Resolution.
