Proclamation congratulating Superintendent Coleman McDonough upon the occasion of his retirement from Allegheny County.

     WHEREAS, “I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” That quote by philosopher, Albert Schweitzer, personifies the talented employees that Allegheny County has been fortunate to have contributed invaluably to our communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough will be retiring from Allegheny County after having served as the head of the agency since June 2016.; and

 

     WHEREAS, Superintendent McDonough began his career in law enforcement in 1984 with the Pennsylvania State Police where he worked his way up through the ranks from Trooper to Deputy Commissioner; and

 

     WHEREAS, Superintendent McDonough has also served as the Law Enforcement Coordinator for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He is a United States Army Veteran and is affiliated with several professional organizations including the Allegheny County Chiefs of Police Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Pennsylvania Association of Chiefs of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates: and

 

     WHEREAS, Superintendent McDonough was appointed as the Superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department on May 26, 2016 and officially assumed that role on June 10, 2016.; and

 

     WHEREAS, under his leadership, the Allegheny County Police Department was able to accomplish the following: modernization of the department that included deployment of a Violent Crimes & Firearms Unit to address violent crime rates, creation of a Mobile Device and Computer Forensic Unit, Tactical De-Escalation and Implicit Bias training for officers, addition of police analysts to provide investigative support and smart policing initiatives, and institution of a Crash Reconstruction Unit and Technical Services Unit, just to name a few; and

 

     WHEREAS, Allegheny County is grateful for the service and dedication of Superintendent Coleman McDonough and his determination to promote, preserve, and deliver security and safety throughout Allegheny County; and

 

     WHEREAS, in his retirement, Superintendent McDonough is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and catching up on some traveling;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, Allegheny County Council Members Patrick Catena, Tom Baker, Liv Bennett, Sam DeMarco, Tom Duerr, Nick Futules, Cindy Kirk, Paul Klein, Bob Macey, John Palmiere, Robert Palmosina, Anita Prizio, DeWitt Walton and Paul Zavarella, do hereby recognize and congratulate Superintendent Coleman McDonough upon the occasion of his retirement from Allegheny County, and we commend him for all that he has done for the county.
