Proclamation recognizing Arthur "Bud" Gastgeb for receiving the South Hills Marine Corps League Detachment 726's "Marine of the Year" Award in November 2007.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with a rich tradition of personnel who served with distinction in the Armed Forces of our great Country; and
WHEREAS, Arthur “Bud” Gastgeb, a former Cold War-era Marine Corps Platoon Sergeant from 1953-1956, has been the recipient of 9 service-related commendations; and
WHEREAS, most recently, in November 2007, Gastgeb was presented with the “Marine of the Year Award” by the South Hills Marine Corps League Detachment 726, cited for, “unselfish dedication and outstanding contribution and service to the Detachment, along with outstanding community service”; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gastgeb served as Fundraising Chairman, raising $19,000 in donations and grants for the Detachment, as well as securing the donation of a vehicle for Detachment transportation to the many functions held within the community; and
WHEREAS, additionally, Mr. Gastgeb coordinated the annual “Toys for Tots” campaign, collecting holiday gifts for underprivileged children in our community; and
WHEREAS, demonstrating his dedication to United States Veterans, Mr. Gastgeb volunteered to assist former Marines in gaining access to their benefits from the Veterans Administration and currently works as a member of the Bethel Park Veterans Committee, which built and maintains the Veterans Memorial and military memorabilia located at the Municipal building; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby wishes to recognize and commend Arthur “Bud” Gastgeb for his unparalleled dedication and service to the United States and his commitment to the United States Marine Corps. We congratulate you on being awarded the prestigious “Marine of the Year Award” from the South Hills Marine Corps League Detachment 726. Your actions and accomplishments have conferred honor upon the members of this Council and all the residents of Allegheny County.
