Proclamation recognizing the honorees at the 2007 Allegheny County Black Elected Officials Breakfast, held on December 1, 2007.

 

Body

WHEREAS, through her many accomplishments, including her elections as the first African-American women to serve on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in 1987 and the second African-American woman to serve on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 2005, the Honorable Cynthia A. Baldwin has distinguished herself as a trailblazer for African-American women in the judicial system; and

 

WHEREAS, since receiving her J.D. from Duquesne University, where she was also a member of the Law Review, Justice Baldwin has spent much of her time serving the community.  A member-emerita of the Duquesne University Board of Directors and past president of its Law Alumni board, she has lectured at Duquesne University and the Widener School of Law, and in 1998, was chosen to present seminars for judges, law professors, and students in Mainland China; and 

 

WHEREAS, Justice Baldwin is an active member of several non-profit boards, has served as attorney-in-charge at the Bureau of Consumer Protection, and also lends her vast abilities to the International Women's Forum and the International Association of Women Judges; and 

 

WHEREAS, Justice Baldwin is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and a former Master in the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Inns of Court and the Matrimonial Inns of Court.  She is a current member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Homer S. Brown Law Association, and the Women's Bar Association.  In addition to her many accolades, she was chosen as a Fulbright Scholar in 1994 and proceeded to bring her talents overseas, offering assistance in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Uganda, and Tanzania;

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby joins the Allegheny County Black Elected Officials in recognizing Justice Cynthia A. Baldwin upon the completion of her service to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.  This Council commends Justice Baldwin's dedication and commitment to leadership and excellence which serves as an inspiration to this Council and the citizens of Allegheny County.
