Proclamation honoring the memory of John Richard Mascio and recognizing his commitment to public service, skilled professionalism, and devotion to his family.

Whereas, John Richard Mascio was born January 13, 1952, and from his childhood in Bloomfield to his career in government with the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, John was a source of great joy, charm, and inspiration for anyone he encountered; and
Whereas, John began his service to the residents of the County in 1976 as an aide for the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, and remained a faithful and dedicated City employee through 1999, at which time he was the Deputy City Clerk; and
Whereas, in 1999, the newly established Allegheny County Council chose John as its first employee, in the capacity of Chief Clerk, a position that he retained until his passing, providing invaluable service to the residents of Allegheny County by guiding Allegheny County Council through its infancy and helping to establish the Council as an effective legislative body for the County; and
Whereas, John's grace, wit, and compassion inevitably made a tremendous impression upon his coworkers, all of whom came to regard him as a friend and mentor; and
Whereas, the skill and tact with which John provided advice and counsel to County Council and its staff will never be forgotten by those who were privileged to work with him; and
Whereas, when John passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009, his family, friends, and coworkers lost a remarkable man of great passion;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes John Richard Mascio's commitment to public service, skilled professionalism, and devotion to his family, which serve as inspirations to us all and, while we cannot hope to replace him, we will honor his memory by emulating the spirit of his dedication. Council further expresses its profound gratitude to his wife Nina, his sons John, Danny, and Dino and his devoted extended family for their support throughout John's career.
