Proclamation recognizing and honoring United States Marine Corps Veteran, Calvin Reichhold for being awarded the Legion of Honor Award.

     WHEREAS, the Chapel of Four Chaplains, a national non-profit organization, was founded in honor and recognition of four Army Chaplains who gave the ultimate sacrifice when their Army transport ship was torpedoed on February 3, 1943; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1951, President Harry S. Truman dedicated an interfaith memorial and sanctuary for the Four Chaplains in Philadelphia; and

 

     WHEREAS, shortly after the memorial dedication, the founding trustees established the Legion of Honor Programs to publicly recognize individuals whose lives model the kind of selfless service to the community, nation, and humanity without regard to race, religion, or creed, which was exemplified by the Four Chaplains; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legion of Honor Programs is comprised of five awards that are presented to veterans for service to the local community, state or regional level, and at the national or international level. The five awards are the Legion of Honor Award, the Humanitarian Award, the Charles W. David, Jr. Lifesaving Medallion, and the Bronze and Gold Medallions; and

 

     WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Veteran, Calvin Reichhold was the recipient of the Legion of Honor Award in recognition of his acts of selfless service in his local community; and


     WHEREAS, in October 1966, Mr. Reichhold joined the Marine Corps; serving three and a half years on active duty and the remainder of his time on inactive reserve. In 1967, Mr. Reichhold was shipped to Vietnam where his military occupation code was 1371 Combat Engineer (TAD to the 101st Airborne) and his primary duty was detection and mine sweeping. His squad, known as “Gypsy Bravo” received an Army Unit Citation for their commendable work and performance during combat conditions.

 

     WHEREAS, in October 1969, Mr. Reichhold was discharged out of Camp Lejeune, Charlie Company 2nd Engineers. He returned to his native Pittsburgh where he later met and married his wife, Carol. Together they have a son and daughter and four granddaughters;

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Council Member Cindy Kirk, do hereby recognize and honor United States Marine Corps Veteran, Calvin Reichhold for being awarded the Legion of Honor Award, and I thank him for his service to our county and continued dedication to his community.
