Proclamation congratulating the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for being named the 2014 Best Overall Daily Newspaper by the Society of Professional Journalists Keystone Pro Chapter.

WHEREAS, in 1970, Richard "Dick" Scaife, purchased a small market newspaper, then known as the Tribune-Review, based in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In 1992, Mr. Scaife expanded operations of the newspaper into Pittsburgh and renamed it the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the centerpiece of Trib Total Media, now the city's largest source of news and information in Western Pennsylvania; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife has devoted his professional life to producing a quality daily newspaper for our region; his belief that newspapers are essential to America, and to any free and prospering nation, is demonstrated by his commitment to delivering international, national and regional news 7-days a week; and
 
WHEREAS, on May 31, 2014 at the Pennsylvania Press Conference, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review was named the best overall daily newspaper in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in an annual competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Keystone Pro Chapter; and
 
WHEREAS, judges in the SPJ Spotlight Contest called the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review "a substantial, well-rounded print edition with many features relevant and important to the community." They cited a "sophisticated and reader friendly" layout and a "great, engaging" sports section; and
 
WHEREAS, this Council expresses its appreciation to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for its commitment to providing in-depth coverage of Allegheny County Council; this commitment is evidenced by a designated reporter that attends regular and committee meetings to inform the public on matters before the legislative body of county government;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for earning the 2014 First Place Spotlight Award as Best Overall Daily Newspaper in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. FURTHERMORE, we thank Mr. Scaife and the staff for bringing professional, award-winning journalism to the residents of Allegheny County.
