Proclamation celebrating the 250th anniversary of the naming of the Pittsburgh region.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the 250th anniversary of the naming of the Pittsburgh region is an opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage and highlight the assets that make Southwestern Pennsylvania one of the best places to live, work, visit, and invest; and

 

WHEREAS, our region's talented workforce and technology have contributed countless innovations that have transformed the nation and the world, from our past as a powerhouse of iron, steel, and glass to our present leadership in nanotechnology, education, healthcare, and other knowledge industries; and

 

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh 250 has identified and is supporting the completion of three grand “Signature Projects” for residents and visitors that create lasting legacies, including the transformation of Point State Park to serve as our region's “front door,” with expanded riverfront access, public art, and a refurbished fountain; publication of Pennsylvania's Forbes Trail: Gateways and Getaways Along the Legendary Route From Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, celebrating historical road forged during the French and Indian War and many of the notable stops along the way; and the completion of the Great Allegheny Passage, a world-class, 335-mile link from George Washington's Mt. Vernon to Pittsburgh that bicyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, and trailside businesses will celebrate with an inaugural ride that concludes October 4; and

 

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh 250 is a grassroots celebration involving hundreds of individuals and organizations across the region through initiatives including Community Connections grants totaling $1 million to projects celebrating our region's pride and progress in history, civics, and the arts; 250 and Fit, a health and wellness program challenging local residents to transform their lifestyles; and Reunion and Homecoming, aimed at bring back former residents to our region;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby join our fellow county elected officials in proclaiming 2008 as a time for all citizens to celebrate our history, enjoy the present, imagine a bright future, and work together to make it happen by celebrating our anniversary year with Pittsburgh 250.
