Proclamation congratulating Fire Marshal Charles J. Belgie, Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement after 68 years of dedicated service with the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community; individuals such as Mr. Charles J. Belgie, Jr. who has placed his stamp of character and hard work throughout the community, as both a public servant and strong leader; and
 
WHEREAS, after 68 years of dedicated service to Moon Township, Charles J. Belgie, Jr. retired in September 2014 as the Fire Marshal for Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company (VFC), and he relinquished his position as chairman of the Allegheny County Firemen's Board; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Belgie joined the Moon Township VFC March 18, 1946 on his 16th birthday; Two years later, he joined the Navy and served for four years on a destroyer, including a tour of duty in Korea. After returning stateside, he once again volunteered with the company and resumed his duties; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1955, Mr. Belgie was elected to the office of captain, and to assistant fire chief the following year; He served in that role under his father, who served as fire chief, until 1974, when the younger Belgie was elected chief himself. In 1985, Mr. Belgie retired from Bell Telephone Company and was appointed by the Moon Township Board of Supervisors as the township's fire marshal. He served as both fire chief and marshal until 2009; and
 
WHEREAS, over the years, Mr. Belgie served in a variety of roles on local, county, and statewide emergency-related committees and boards, and he will retain a state level position as secretary to the Firemen's Legislative Federation, which works with Pennsylvania lawmakers to support legislation supporting emergency services and personnel;
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate Mr. Charles J. Belgie, Jr. upon the occasion of his retirement, and we thank him for his commitment to serving the community, and we wish him all the best in the future.
