Proclamation recognizing Mayor Betty Esper for her years of unwavering dedication towards Homestead Borough and its residents.

WHEREAS, “knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers. It may not be difficult to store up in the mind a vast quantity of facts within a comparatively short time, but the ability to form judgments requires the severe discipline of hard work and the tempering heat of experience and maturity.” That quote by Calvin Coolidge depicts the true essences of Betty Esper’s character and her years devoted to Homestead Borough; and
WHEREAS, in 1951, at the age of 18, Betty Esper, the Mayor of Homestead, took a job at U.S. Steel as a messenger and was soon promoted to clerk. Thirty-six years later, she was part of the clean-up crew during the final days of the Homestead Works; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Esper, a lifelong resident of Homestead Borough, entered local politics in 1980 when she was elected to Borough Council; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Esper served on Homestead Borough Council for 10 years before becoming the first female mayor of Homestead; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Esper constantly displays unwavering commitment towards the borough, and with continuous determination, she has been able to make an impact on the quality of life for the 3,170 residents; and
WHEREAS, known for her fighting spirit, no-nonsense attitude and tireless devotion to her hometown, Mayor Esper has earned the nickname “Iron Butterfly”; and
WHEREAS, as mayor, Mayor Esper understands the importance of establishing a strong community base, and she is committed to attending community functions and advancing her mayoral and administrative duties;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Allegheny County Council Member Paul Klein, do hereby recognize Mayor Betty Esper for her years of unwavering dedication towards Homestead Borough and its residents.
