Proclamation recognizing the accomplishments of Dr. Vernell A. Watson Lillie and celebrating her retirement after 34 years of teaching in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Africana Studies.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhood and the community as a whole, individuals such as Dr. Vernell A. Watson Lillie, who has placed her stamp of character and hard work throughout the community, as both a public servant and strong leader; and

 

WHEREAS, after 34 years of excellence in teaching, Dr. Lillie officially retired from her position as Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies, Humanities Division at the University of Pittsburgh, a position she has held since September of 1972; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Lillie is a Cum Laude graduate of Dillard University, New Orleans, Louisiana, with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Speech and is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earning both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts in English; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Lillie has received numerous awards for her outstanding achievements in theatre and in 2005, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Seton Hill University and honored with Judge Homer Brown's “Drum Major for Justice Award”; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Lillie is founder and producing artistic director of The Kuntu Repertory Theatre, created in 1975, it serves to create, preserve and present the artistic dreams, legacies and history of Africans.  The group reflects the cultural tradition of Africa through dance/movement, drama, music, visual arts and words that move both performers and audiences to personal growth and social action and change;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognizes and commends Dr. Vernell A. Watson Lillie for her unparalleled dedication and commitment in serving, in many capacities, Allegheny County and our region as a whole.  This Council wishes her all the best on her well-deserved retirement and joins her family and friends in celebrating this momentous occasion with her.
