Proclamation recognizing Brenda J. Waters, Anchor/Reporter with KDKA-TV News, for her outstanding volunteer efforts and commending the Board of Directors Sickle Cell Society, Inc. for honoring her at their Tenth Recognition Dinner on February 23, 2006.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals such as Brenda J. Waters who is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhood and the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Waters was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, moved to Washington, D.C. with her parents when she was six years old and came to Pittsburgh in 1979; and
WHEREAS, she liked the city so much that she never left, stating it was close enough to her parents in Washington, D.C. to get home quickly in the event of an emergency, but just far enough away to feel independent. She is proud to call Pittsburgh home; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Waters earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in social work and a Master's degree from American University in public relations; and
WHEREAS, “…Have a positive day…” is how she ends the weekend morning newscast, where she is Co-Anchor at KDKA-TV, covering day to day news stories throughout Allegheny County; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Waters serves on the Board of Directors of the Sickle Cell Society, Inc. and volunteers her time and makes contributions to several organizations, including Gwen's Girls, Myriam's Women Shelter, Lydia's Place and Women Inc. of Southwestern Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, she speaks at local schools and churches and was honored twice by Ebenezer Baptist Church, located in the Hill District, as one of the 100 Outstanding Women in the community and has been named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania. She also received the Cecile M. Springer Womanpower Award, recognizing women as superior role models in our society;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Brenda Waters for her outstanding volunteer efforts and commends the Sickle Cell Society for honoring her at their Tenth Recognition Dinner. Ms. Waters' impact on this community, and her commitment to Allegheny County and its citizens, serves as an inspiration to us all.
