Proclamation congratulating New Voices Pittsburgh: Women of Color for Reproductive Justice upon the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

WHEREAS, New Voices Pittsburgh: Women of Color for Reproductive Justice (NVP) was founded by La'Tasha D. Mayes, Bekezela Mguni, Lois "Toni" McClendon and Maria Nicole Smith on March 16, 2004 to mobilize women of color in Southwestern Pennsylvania to attend the March for Women's Lives, a demonstration for reproductive rights and women's rights held on April 25, 2004 in Washington D.C.; and
WHEREAS, New Voices Pittsburgh is building a social change movement dedicated to the health and well-being of Black women and girls through leadership development, Human Rights and Reproductive Justice; and
WHEREAS, New Voices Pittsburgh is the only Human Rights and social change organization for women of color, led by women of color and about women of color in Pittsburgh and is deeply committed to improving the health, well-being and quality of life for Black women and girls; and
WHEREAS, on Thursday, December 4, 2014, at the Andy Warhol Museum, New Voices Pittsburgh will celebrate ten years of organizing and serving 10,0000 women of color, ages 12-35 in Pittsburgh, through social change activism, civic engagement and leadership development;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate New Voices Pittsburgh upon the occasion of its 10th anniversary, and we join in celebration of the culture, legacy and achievements of women of color in the Greater Pittsburgh Region.
