Proclamation proclaiming May 6-13, 2006 as National Safe Kids Week and recognizing the Allegheny County Safe Kids Coalition for their efforts in promoting the National Safe Kids Week theme of "Safe Pools for Safe Kids."

WHEREAS, the Allegheny County Health Department is home to the Allegheny County Safe Kids Coalition and is part of the National Safe Kids Campaign. Allegheny County Safe Kids is a grassroots group of volunteers and organizations committed to promoting the prevention of childhood injuries in Allegheny County through education, collaboration and advocacy. They provide safety education to parents and children in the major risk areas of traffic safety, water safety, fire safety, poison prevention, and drowning prevention; and
WHEREAS, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 14. In 2003, 782 children ages 14 and under died as a result of unintentional drowning and more than half of drowning among children ages 1 to 4 are pool-related. From 1985 to 2004, 34 children died and more than 130 children were injured as a result of pool and hot tub entrapment; and
WHEREAS, Safe Kids Worldwide, in partnership with founding sponsor Johnson & Johnson, will launch a swimming pool, hot tub and spa safety initiative called “Safe Pools for Safe Kids” to protect children from drowning, entrapment and entanglement; and
WHEREAS, during Safe Kids Week 2006, Allegheny County Safe Kids will hold local community outreach events promoting “Safe Pools for Safe Kids” and citizens throughout Allegheny County will hear the important message of creating a safe pool, hot tub and spa environment by using fences/barriers, door alarms, and drain covers; and
WHEREAS, Safe Kids Week 2006 includes a nationwide public education campaign and the release of a research report about parents' attitudes and behaviors around drowning prevention to assist in the overall mission of Safe Kids Worldwide and...
