Proclamation celebrating the 25th anniversary of the All-American Soapbox Derby Race in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, the Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program for both girls and boys ages 9-16 and has run nationally since 1934; and
WHEREAS, the idea for a Soap Box Derby grew out of a photo assignment of newsman Myron Scott from Dayton, Ohio. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with the event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale; and
WHEREAS, the All-American Soap Box Derby is a national organization that sanctions local races and holds a Championship race every year in Akron, Ohio. The three divisions include Stock Car, Super Stock Car and Masters Car; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the program is to teach youngsters the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to complete a project once it has begun; and
WHEREAS, on Father's Day, June 17, 2007, the Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby Association will hold its annual All-American Soap Box Derby in McKeesport, Pennsylvania;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate the Greater Pittsburgh Soap Box Derby Association upon the momentous occasion of its 25th Anniversary of holding the All-American Soapbox Derby Race in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. We thank the Association for providing 25 years of youth racing which has brought joy to the residents of McKeesport and Allegheny County.
