Proclamation congratulating the General Electric Lighting Glass Plant upon the occasion of its 95th anniversary.
Body...
WHEREAS, the GE Lighting Glass Plant is celebrating its 95th anniversary in 2014 and will commemorate this milestone with a gathering of 175 current and former employees at the annual Christmas party; and
WHEREAS, the General Electric (GE) Lighting Glass Plant opened in 1907, in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, under the ownership of the J.B. Higbee Company before it was sold to General Electric in 1918. By 1935, the Great Depression forced operations to shut down and production was shifted to Niles, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, three years later, the glass manufacturing plant reopened and now remains one of three such GE plants operating today, producing about 4 million pounds of glass annually; and
WHEREAS, the plant produces four different types of glass, helping to manufacture around 70 different types of glass products; and
WHEREAS, the plant operates on continuous shifts 24 hours a day and 7 days a week with 62 part-time and four full-time salaried employees;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, does hereby congratulate the current and former management and staff of the GE Lighting Glass Plant upon the monumental occasion of its 95th anniversary.
