WHEREAS, breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among American women; and
 
WHEREAS, organizations across Allegheny County and the United States come together every October to spread the important message of breast cancer awareness; and
 
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists who fight to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all, and energize science to find cures; and
 
WHEREAS, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we renew our commitment to fighting this disease, raising awareness, and supporting those affected by breast cancer;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, does hereby proclaim the month of October 2014 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Allegheny County.  We commend the efforts of the Pittsburgh Chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and we call upon government officials, businesses, communities, health care professionals, educators, volunteers, and the residents of Allegheny County to continue our community's strong commitment to preventing, treating, and ultimately curing breast cancer.
