Proclamation recognizing the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania upon the momentous occasion of its 190th anniversary.

WHEREAS, 2008 marks the historical 190th birthday of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. District Court operates under the mission, “to preserve and enhance the rule of law while providing an impartial and accessible forum for the just, timely, and economical resolution of legal proceedings within the court's jurisdiction, so as to protect individual rights and liberties, promote public trust and confidence in the judicial system, and to maintain judicial independence”; and
WHEREAS, this year's celebration, which was coordinated by the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, will focus around an oral history program; and
WHEREAS, the event will feature vignettes of the oral histories of Circuit Judge Joseph F. Weis, Jr., District Court Judges Gerald J. Weber and Maurice B. Cohill, Jr. and Bankruptcy Judge Bernhard Schaffler, among others, and will highlight the judicial experiences from different time periods throughout the court's history; and
WHEREAS, following the oral history portion of the event, a reception will be held, allowing business and government leaders to gather together to celebrate this momentous occasion;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council joins in celebration of the 190th birthday of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. We thank our judicial leaders, past and present, who have made the U.S. District Court a cornerstone of justice in Allegheny County, and we wish you another 190 years of success.
