body

                     WHEREAS, Allegheny County Council and the Washington County Commissioners recognize the necessity of mitigating current flood impacts and to prevent increased runoff from new land development in the Chartiers Creek Watershed; and

WHEREAS, the Chartiers Creek Watershed comprises 280 square miles in portions of both Allegheny County and Washington County, beginning six miles south of Washington, PA, flowing for roughly 52 miles and connecting with the Ohio River approximately three miles downstream from Pittsburgh; and

                                          WHEREAS, portions of the watershed in both counties had significant damage from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan on September 17, 2004, and remain vulnerable to local and regional flooding;

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS MOVED, AND IT IS THE SENSE OF THE COUNCIL OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY, that Allegheny County Council supports the cooperation of Allegheny County and Washington County in attempting to explore the development of a watershed management plan for the Chartiers Creek Watershed.
