Proclamation thanking the Pittsburgh Pirates for voluntarily banning smoking from PNC Park and creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for fans and workers.

WHEREAS, on January 2, 2007, Allegheny County Council adopted an ordinance to prohibit smoking in certain public places and workplaces, and providing for penalties for violations; and
WHEREAS, on May 22, 2007, Pennsylvania's Commonwealth Court declared that Allegheny County's ban on smoking in public places is preempted by Pennsylvania's Clean Indoor Air Act and is therefore, null and void; and
WHEREAS, in consideration of the health and comfort of others, the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club declared that smoking is not permitted anywhere in PNC Park, even after the Commonwealth Court's ruling; and
WHEREAS, we commend Chief Executive Officer Kevin McClatchy and the Pittsburgh Pirates for having the courage to voluntarily ban smoking and for creating a safe, comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere for fans attending games at PNC Park;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and thank the Pittsburgh Pirates for offering a non-smoking policy which will protect workers and guests from harmful exposure to secondhand smoke.
