Proclamation recognizing Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow University and Duquesne University for leading in the struggle against sweatshops.

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, the global apparel industry is rife with abuse of human and worker rights, which are compromised by brands and labels in order to make a profit; and

 

WHEREAS, Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow University and Duquesne University have become leaders in the struggle against sweatshops by protecting the rights of workers who sew collegiate apparel; and

 

WHEREAS, these universities have committed to protecting the rights of their workers by reviewing the conditions in which they operate, responding to workers' testimonies and calling the public's attention to the problems; and

 

WHEREAS, we commend the universities for their efforts to quell human rights abuse and for joining the Workers Rights Consortium - an independent, non-profit monitor of workplace conditions that allows the universities to assure social responsibility; and

 

WHEREAS, because of their efforts, these institutions lead in the struggle against sweatshop abuse and promote the value and importance of human rights;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, recognizes Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow University and Duquesne University for working tirelessly to end the abuse of workers who create their collegiate apparel.  Their efforts lead in the struggle to establish social responsibility in clothing factories and help expose this important issue to the world.
