Proclamation recognizing the 90th anniversary of the Semper Fidelis Club.

WHEREAS, community organizations founded and maintained by the citizens of Allegheny County unite our neighborhoods and promote progress to the youth of our area; and
WHEREAS, the Semper Fidelis Club of McKeesport celebrates its 90th anniversary on October 31, 2009; the founders of the club modeled it after the National Association of Colored Women's Club, Incorporated to define a common bond of interest for African Americans residing in McKeesport; and
WHEREAS, “semper fidelis” means always faithful, and for the past 90 years the club has remained faithful to bettering the community of McKeesport by providing scholarships to students of McKeesport Area High School, helping them achieve their dreams by assisting them with further their education; and
WHEREAS, the Semper Fidelis Club has given financially to many social agencies throughout its history; it contributes regularly to Adopt-A-Family in McKeesport and has given to the African-American Heritage Room at the University of Pittsburgh to promote African-American culture; and
WHEREAS, the club is one of the oldest in the Pennsylvania State Federation; as it was when it was founded, the Semper Fidelis Club focuses on strengthening family ties and community relationships, which bonds our county into a well-knit society;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, congratulates the Semper Fidelis Club of McKeesport upon the monumental occasion of its 90th anniversary. We commend the club's impressive longevity and endless support for our community, and we hope they continue to serve our county long into the future.
