Proclamation proclaiming April 21-23, 2006 to be National & Global Youth Service Day in Allegheny County and recognizing Communities in Schools Academy-Southland students for their valuable contributions to the residents of Baldwin Borough and Allegheny County.

Body
WHEREAS, millions of youth will participate in National & Global Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, on April 21 - April 23, 2006. They will tutor young children, engage in disaster relief, register new voters, educate their communities about good nutrition and meet many more community needs through their service; and

WHEREAS, on April 21, 2006, Communities In Schools (CIS) Academy-Southland students, Animal Friends volunteers, and the Baldwin Health Center will celebrate the 18th annual National & Global Youth Service Day, a program of Youth Service America, in partnership with the National Leadership Council, PARADE Magazine, and the State Farm Companies Foundation. CIS Academy-Southland students will visit Baldwin Health Center residents to help them make sun-catchers, enjoy refreshments and interact with the small animals from Animal Friends during Pet-Assisted Therapy Sessions; and

WHEREAS, every day of the year Allegheny County's youth make important contributions to the welfare of the county, and this event supports youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public, the media, and elected officials about the role of youth as community leaders; and

WHEREAS, we thank those who volunteer to serve a cause greater than self, and we commend the Communities in Schools Academy-Southland for their dedication, commitment, and efforts to build a more hopeful county for our citizens;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims April 21-23, 2006 to be National & Global Youth Service Day in Allegheny County. This Council celebrates the valuable contributions, and important role, that the yo...
