Proclamation commending the McKees Rocks Historical Society for recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Pressed Steel Car Strike of 1909.

WHEREAS, the McKees Rocks Historical Society will mark the Centennial of the Pressed Steel Car Strike of 1909 with a reception, dinner and awards ceremony at the Holy Ghost Byzantine Church in McKees Rocks on Friday, August 21, 2009; with an Ecumenical Service of Commemoration at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in McKees Rocks on Saturday, August 22, 2009; and with a picnic and party at Preston Park on Saturday, August 22, 2009; and

                     

WHEREAS, the McKees Rocks Historical Society was formed in December 2007 to promote and preserve the history of McKees Rocks and Stowe Township; and

 

WHEREAS, the Pressed Steel Car Strike occurred in McKees Rocks in 1909 from July 13 to September 8; 13 people were killed and over 500 were injured in the violent strike; and

 

WHEREAS, the strike of 1909 was a milestone in labor history and was publicized nationally by the New York Times and the Pittsburgh Press, bringing reform and attention to important labor issues previously unaddressed; and

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby commends the McKees Rocks Historical Society and the Pennsylvania Labor History Society for marking the Centennial of the Pressed Steel Car Strike of 1909 with events on August 2009 in McKees Rocks and Preston Park. The strike was a monumental moment in labor history, and we thank you sincerely for honoring the affair.
