Proclamation recognizing and welcoming the National Society of Black Engineers for choosing to host their 2006 Annual Convention in Pittsburgh and for their efforts to increase the number of culturally responsible African American engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

Body
WHEREAS, the largest convention of the year will take place in Pittsburgh from March 29 through April 2, 2006 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, hosting the arrival of 10,000 members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the largest student managed organization in the world; and
WHEREAS, the National Society of Black Engineers mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible African American engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. The organization has more than 17,000 members and more than 300 chapters worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the five-day conference has a plethora of talented speakers including Randal Pinkett, president and CEO, BCT Partners, Rhodes Scholar, and most recently, named the winner of NBC's hit reality television show, “The Apprentice,” with Donald Trump. Companies with a presence include Bayer Materials Science, PPG Industries, U.S. Steel Corp., Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Institute and McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, engineers have long played an essential role in Pittsburgh since its early days as a world leader in manufacturing and mining, and engineers continue to shape Pittsburgh's economic landscape by advancing frontiers in health care, technology, homeland security and robotics; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates that attendees will leave behind an anticipated $12.8 million in direct visitor spending, including roughly $439,000 in hotel tax revenue, $116,000 in RAD revenue and $695,000 in ...
