Proclamation congratulating and welcoming Dr. Patrick D. Gallagher to Allegheny County upon his appointment as the 18th Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Patrick D. Gallagher, Acting Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology, has been selected by the Board of Trustees to serve as the 18th Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded Dr. Gallagher a Gold Medal, its highest honor, for his leadership in interagency coordination efforts; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gallagher received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pittsburgh, and a bachelor's degree in physics and philosophy from Benedictine College. For his post-doctoral work Dr. Gallagher served as a research associate at Boston University. In addition, he taught high school math and science in St. Joseph, Missouri; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gallagher brings exceptional experience to the position, along with an impressive background in promoting partnerships that develop innovation and support research and other academic pursuits to advance the greater good of society;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby welcome Dr. Patrick D. Gallagher to Allegheny County. We are grateful that under his leadership, the University of Pittsburgh is poised for growth and innovation.
