Proclamation honoring 2007 YWCA Racial Justice Award Finalists.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the 16th annual YWCA Racial Justice Awards were held on November 30, 2007 at the Omni William Penn Hotel to honor remarkable women, men, and organizations that have made lasting contributions to the Pittsburgh area by helping to eliminate racial inequity in everyday life; and

 

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women was honored in the category of Government for its significant contributions to health care, business, and human rights-related advocacy; and

 

WHEREAS, under the current leadership of Executive Director Leslie Stiles, the Pennsylvania Commission for Women encourages the formation of county commissions for women and facilitates coalitions among women's organizations across the state, operating under the mission, “To identify and advance the diverse needs and interests of Pennsylvania women and girls; to inform, educate and advocate for them; and to provide opportunities to empower them to reach their highest potential”; and

 

WHEREAS, since its inception in 1974, the Pennsylvania Women's Commission has continued to break barriers in the interest of empowering the women of Pennsylvania.  Its most recent initiatives include the Pennsylvania Governor's Conference for Women, legislative advocacy, a statewide multimedia marketing campaign to raise awareness of women's issues, the Status of Pennsylvania Women Report, the PCW hotline, the Commonwealth of Women newsletter and numerous other guides and books geared towards improving the status of women in the Commonwealth;

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby commends the Pennsylvania Commission for Women for its dedication and commitment to leadership and service which has earned it this distinguished honor and serves as an inspiration to this Council and the citizens of Allegheny County.
