WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals and organizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods and the community as a whole; and

WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in America, more than 220,000 men will be diagnosed this year, surpassing the number of breast cancer cases; more than 31,000 more men will die of the disease; and

WHEREAS, during their lifetimes, one in six American men is at risk of developing prostate cancer; every three minutes another man in the United States receives that diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, prostate cancer is seldom signaled by any symptoms, early detection is extremely difficult without testing; with early detection, prostate cancer mortality is expected to decrease 3.5 percent; and

WHEREAS, the Father's Day 5K/10K Race will support “Us Too!” in its mission to increase prostate cancer awareness, research, education, and screenings for area men; and

WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, the Allegheny County Council is pleased to join the Pittsburgh Area US Too! Prostate Cancer Chapter in recognizing the Father's Day 5K/10K Race for Prostate Cancer Research, Screenings, and Education in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby commends the Pittsburgh Area Us Too! Prostate Cancer Chapter for its dedication to increase prostate cancer awareness, research, and education in Allegheny County and proclaims June 15, 2004 to be “Prostate Cancer Awareness Day” in Allegheny County.
