Proclamation recognizing and thanking Dr. Janet Simon, Superintendent of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, upon the momentous occasion of her retirement.

WHEREAS, Ms. Janet Simon, Ph.D. has done more for blind and multiple disabled children of Pennsylvania than any other person in recent history, specifically for those living in the western half of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simon began her career as a teacher at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in 1968 and worked her way up to the ranks of Executive Director and Superintendent; and
WHEREAS, after 40 years of distinguished service, Dr. Simon will officially retire as Superintendent of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simon has volunteered her time to advocate for equity of women, the elimination of racism and for quality education, as well as many other worthy causes; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Simon has earned numerous awards, including the History Makers Award in Education in 2007, the YWCA Leadership Award in 1995, and Carlow University's Woman of Spirit Award in 2003;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and commend Dr. Janet Simon for her outstanding career dedicated to children with disabilities and their families. Her leadership, compassion, talent and drive has enabled her to make a difference in the lives of thousands of children, families and educators, both in Pennsylvania and across the nation. We congratulate Dr. Simon on her well-deserved retirement and join with family and friends on this momentous occasion.
