Proclamation commending the Jefferson Regional Medical Center for enacting a policy on November 15, 2007 making their entire property non-smoking and tobacco-free.

WHEREAS, on November 15, 2007, Jefferson Regional Medical Center (JRMC) took an important step toward improving patient and employee health and wellness; and
WHEREAS, on November 15th, which also marked the 33rd anniversary of the Great American Smokeout, JRMC enacted a policy making the entire property non-smoking and tobacco-free; and
WHEREAS, the hospital has previously offered assistance to any employees who wanted to quit smoking through the use of tobacco cessation programs, health information, anti-smoking medication discounts, and hypnosis; and
WHEREAS, the smoking and tobacco ban came as the result of complaints from JRMC's patients, many of whom are elderly individuals suffering from pulmonary issues; and
WHEREAS, the JRMC facility was decorated with banners and signs proclaiming their new policy and the J Café served cold turkey sandwiches encouraging people to quit smoking “cold turkey.” Candy was also offered as a substitute to replace tobacco; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council commends the Jefferson Regional Medical Center for enacting a non-smoking and tobacco-free policy. As a prime healthcare institution in our county, JRMC has proven itself to be a model for all medical centers striving to protect the health of their patients and employees. We thank you for taking such an important step towards improving the quality of care at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
