Proclamation declaring April 28, 2008 "Workers Memorial Day" in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, the International Labor Organization reports that every year, more than 2 million workers worldwide are killed as a result of workplace injuries and workplace-related illnesses; and
WHEREAS, millions more are permanently disabled, injured, or become ill due to hazardous workplace conditions; and
WHEREAS, concerned Americans are determined to prevent these tragedies by observing Workers Memorial Day on April 28, 2008, which will serve as a day to remember the victims of workplace injuries, disease, and fatalities; and
WHEREAS, Workers Memorial Day offers all of us a chance to renew our efforts to seek stronger safety and health standards and increased enforcement of these standards, as well as fair and just compensation for all workers; and
WHEREAS, organizations around the world will come together to recognize Workers Memorial Day with events that include speeches, religious services, laying wreaths, and erecting monuments to honor those who have been affected by poor workplace conditions;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council does hereby proclaim Monday, April 28, 2008 “Workers Memorial Day” in Allegheny County in recognition of workers injured, disabled, and killed on the job. We call upon the residents of Allegheny County to rededicate themselves to improving safety and health in every American workplace.
