Proclamation honoring Pitcairn Borough as it celebrates 125 years since its incorporation

      WHEREAS, a weekend long celebration recognizing the 125 years of Pitcairn Borough in Allegheny County will be held June 7-9, 2019; and

 

     WHEREAS, located in the greenery of the Turtle Creek watershed of Allegheny County, Pitcairn Borough was named after Robert Pitcairn, a former superintendent of the Pittsburgh division of the Pennsylvania Railroad; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1880, Mr. Pitcairn ordered the construction of a railroad yard that would become the largest railroad yard in the world; and

 

     WHEREAS, due to the booming railroad industry in the late 19th century, the new commerce and growth in population ultimately led to the borough’s incorporation on June 9, 1894; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pitcairn Borough played a vital role during World War II. Each day more than 200 trains steamed through Pitcairn’s railroad yards carrying troops, supplies, and other critical material for the war effort; and

 

     WHEREAS, today, Pitcairn Borough covers 0.51 square miles and has a total population of 3,294; the borough is known for its close-knit community, and we are excited to join with borough officials this year to celebrate this wonderful borough’s 125th anniversary;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member John DeFazio, do hereby congratulate, and join in celebration with Pitcairn Borough, as it celebrates 125 years since its incorporation. On behalf of Allegheny County Council, we wish the Borough residents, officials and businesses all the best and look forward to learning about, and participating in, the great things that the Borough will offer throughout its next 125 years.
