WHEREAS, healthy marriage is envisioned as the foundational and beneficial institution of a thriving community; and
WHEREAS, in 2004 at the Urban League's State of Black Pittsburgh Conference, citizens and organizations throughout Allegheny County declared the importance of planning a healthy marriage strategy for the Greater Pittsburgh Region; and
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Healthy Marriage Coalition formed to promote healthy marriages and to strengthen family relationships through education, capacity-building, resource development and policy reform and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, Healthy Marriage is linked to nurturing relationships and serves as a cornerstone that further supports the values of economic self-reliance, longevity, and resiliency that benefit all people;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims September 19, 2008 as “Couples of Distinction Day” in Allegheny County. We urge our fellow citizens to observe this day by connecting with community organizations, university and government agencies, faith-based and family-serving institutions that support healthy relationships and marriage education as fundamental components of developing strong families and communities.
