Proclamation thanking Mr. Josh Noel for writing the Chicago Tribune article entitled “New meets old in Pittsburgh: This city is cool. What’s more, it’s not self-conscious enough to care whether you know it.”

WHEREAS, on January 4, 2014, an article written by Josh Noel entitled, “New meets old in Pittsburgh: This city is cool. What’s more, it’s not self-conscious enough to care whether you know it” was published in the Chicago Tribune; and

WHEREAS, Allegheny County Council would like to acknowledge Mr. Noel’s kind words about our fair city and illustrate, “tongue firmly in cheek”; how cool Pittsburgh really is; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is known as the “Second City”; Pittsburgh is often referred to as the “City of Champions”; and

WHEREAS, Chicago lies beside two (2) rivers, the Chicago River in downtown and the Calumet River in the industrial far South Side. Pittsburgh is situated on a peninsula jutting into an intersection of three (3) rivers, i.e. the Ohio, Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers; and
WHEREAS, Chicago has 77 distinct neighborhoods; Pittsburgh has 90 such neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is home to the Bears; Pittsburgh is home to the Steelers. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls with six (6) championships; and

WHEREAS, Chicago is home to the Cubs and White Sox; Pittsburgh is home to the Pirates. The Chicago Cubs have won two (2) World Series and the Chicago White Sox have won three (3) World Series; The Pittsburgh Pirates have won five (5) World Series; and

WHEREAS, Chicago claims the late Harry Caray as a baseball announcer for the White Sox and the Cubs. In 1990, Caray, creator of the seventh-inning stretch “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Pittsburgh claims the late Myron Cope, the voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the first football announcer inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Cope, inventor of the “Terrible Towel,” has raised over $3 million...
