WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh will host its 35th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert November 2-5 with legendary jazz musicians performing under the direction of Nathan Davis, saxophonist, head of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program and founder of the annual event; and

 

WHEREAS, musicians performing include: Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Charles Tolliver, trumpet; James Spalding, alto saxophone; James Moody, saxophone; Larry Coryell, guitar; Renee Rosnes, piano; Nestor Torres, flute; Abraham Laboriel, bass; and Idris Muhammad, drums; and

 

                     WHEREAS, this event provides a lineup of internationally renowned jazz musicians, free on-campus seminars and lectures, appearances in Pittsburgh-area schools and other community venues, brown-bag lunches with live jazz, a jazz memorabilia exhibition; and

 

WHEREAS, this unique seminar is the longest-running event of its kind in the country and the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert will be awarded the 2005 Mellon Community Jazz Award; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby  salutes and commends the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert for  receiving this year's Mellon Community Jazz Award.  We congratulate the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert on the occasion of its 35th Anniversary and express our gratitude to Pitt's Jazz Studies Program for its dedication and unparalleled contribution to our region and society.
