Proclamation recognizing and commending the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania upon their continued commitment and dedication to animals and proclaiming the week of May 2 - 8, 2004 as “Be Kind to Animals” Week in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals and organizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhoods and the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania was established in 1909 by five Pittsburghers with a shared concern for both animal welfare and the public health; and
WHEREAS, The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania's mission is to educate the public as to the proper relationship with animals; to provide temporary shelter, food, and medical attention to neglected and injured animals; to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them; and to secure merciful solutions for imperiled pets; and
WHEREAS, The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania is one of the few, if not the only, animal shelters in the United States to have an open door policy, and a contract with Animal Control, while maintaining a "no kill for adoptables" policy at the same time; and
WHEREAS, during the week of May 2-8, 2004, The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania will be celebrating “Be Kind to Animals” Week. The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania is kind to animals by staying true to their "No-Kill for Adoptable Pets" pledge and providing a safe and loving environment for all animals waiting to be adopted;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes and commends The Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania upon their continued commitment and dedication to animals and also hereby proclaims the week of May 2 - 8, 2004 as “Be Kind to Animals” Week in Allegheny County.
