Proclamation declaring the week of September 7-13, 2008 "Senior Community Center Week" in Allegheny County.
Body
WHEREAS, Senior Community Centers serve as a symbol of the importance of providing senior citizens with the resources that they need in order to continue living fulfilling lives through later adulthood; and
WHEREAS, throughout the United States, Senior Community Centers provide opportunities for senior citizens to stay active and healthy, continue learning, share experiences, and stay connected with friends and the community; and
WHEREAS, Senior Community Centers also help older persons to enhance their dignity and support their independence; and
WHEREAS, of the 200,000 people who visit Senior Community Centers annually in the United States, more than 83,000 eligible persons eat meals at these centers and more then 4 million meals are served at the centers annually; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has the fifth highest number of people ages 60 and over in the country, many of whom are served by the more than 600 Senior Community Centers throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Senior Community Centers continue to grow in response to the many challenges faced by an increasingly large senior population and are responding to those challenges with the utmost caring and dedication;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby declares September 7-13, 2008 “Senior Community Center Week” in Allegheny County. We join with residents throughout Allegheny County in commending the staff and volunteers of our Senior Community Centers for all of their hard work, and we thank them for their continued commitment to providing our senior citizens with the services and the respect that they deserve.
