Body

WHEREAS, on September 30, 2007, individual runners and walkers, corporate teams, wheelchair athletes, entertainers and hometown fans will take to the city streets for the 30th  Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield; and

WHEREAS, The Great Race, established as a 10K race by the late Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri, has attracted more than a quarter million participants since 1977.  Over the years, this popular fall fitness classic has grown to include a 5K run/walk, running clinic, two-day expo and children's race, with approximately 10,000 individuals taking part in these various activities annually; and

WHEREAS, in celebration of The Great Race's 30th Anniversary, Senator John Heinz History Center's Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum has introduced a permanent tribute to Pennsylvania's largest 10K race.  In addition to introducing this new installation, the Sports Museum recently unveiled a yearlong exhibit that showcases Great Race artifacts including the 1977 first-place trophy and a quilt incorporating all 30 race T-shirts; and

                     WHEREAS, rated among the Top Twenty Multi-Race Events by USA Track & Field's publication On The Roads, The Great Race attracts athletes from 35 states and 30 different countries.  However, the majority of participants in The Great Race are hometown athletes, making the race one of the region's finest traditions;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and congratulate the City of Pittsburgh upon the momentous occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race.  We thank the organizers, sponsors, athletes and their families for making The Great Race an exceptional event which enjoys an outstanding tradition of excellence.
