Proclamation recognizing and celebrating the Borough of Plum's 50th Anniversary and expressing gratitude for their contributions and services.

Body

WHEREAS, Allegheny County Council is proud to recognize the Borough of Plum, celebrating its 50th Anniversary on March 2, 2006; and

WHEREAS, three months after Allegheny County was created, Plum Township came into existence as one of Allegheny County's seven original townships (December 1788).  Minutes from the earliest recorded meetings of the Plum Township Board of Supervisors indicate that members held meetings in their homes, and later in the New Texas School, working on the budget, road repairs, clearing trees, building and repairing culverts and bridges, snow removal and collecting back taxes, issues which are still relevant today; and

WHEREAS, on Friday, March 2, 1956, Judge Henry O'Brien entered an order changing the status of the Township of Plum to the Borough of Plum, guided by a Mayor-Council form of government, the once rural community is now a thriving suburban-residential community; and

WHEREAS, Anthony E. O'Block was Plum's first burgess and became Mayor of Plum in 1956, and after 50 years as a Borough, the face of Plum has changed drastically from a farming and coal mining community to a popular residential area, growing to a population of roughly 30,000; and

WHEREAS, Plum Borough is the largest Borough in Allegheny County and the second largest in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at 28.88 square miles;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the Borough of Plum on the occasion of their 50th anniversary, and wish the community and residents continued success and lifelong happiness.  This Council expresses sincere gratitude for Plum's contributions and services, which serve as an inspiration to us all.
