Proclamation honoring the late Joseph J. Bendel and declaring May 26, 2008 "Joseph Bendel Day" in Allegheny County.

Body

WHEREAS, Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have been blessed with exemplary leaders who have made invaluable contributions to our communities, our County and the world; and

 

                     WHEREAS, throughout his life, the late Mr. Joseph J. Bendel contributed immensely to the quality of life of the residents of Allegheny County and will be honored for his commitment with a lighthouse dedicated in his name at the Marina at McKees Point on Monday, May 26, 2008; and

                     

WHEREAS, Mr. Bendel was instrumental in developing the Marina at McKees Point on the Youghiogheny River in 1997; and

 

WHEREAS, his focus on community development in the Mon Valley also allowed him to bring the Echo Star Communications call center to U.S. Steel's former National Works, an act that brought more than 1,000 jobs to the Mon Valley; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Bendel was also actively involved in championing a multitude of additional community issues, including the promotion of public libraries and advocating for the pro-life movement; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Bendel was a force in local government, where he served as a McKeesport City Councilman for a total of 11 years and as the Mayor of McKeesport from 1995 through 1999;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council honors the life and legacy of Mr. Joseph J. Bendel, who exemplified the meaning of “public servant” through his life's work.  Furthermore, we hereby proclaim May 26, 2008 “Joseph J. Bendel Day” in Allegheny County.  We join with Mr. Bendel's family and friends and all the residents of Allegheny County in remembering him on this day, and always.
