WHEREAS, February has been designated American Heart Month and February 18 Women's Heart Day by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and

 

WHEREAS, one out of every three women in the United States is affected by heart disease - the number one killer of women in the nation - but there remain far few educational and behavioral programs for women's heart health than for other disease; and

 

WHEREAS, the Working Hearts coalition and its partners, celebrating their third anniversary, are continuing to solve this crisis by promoting a public health campaign, Strong Women/Strong Hearts; serving as a catalyst for improving women's heart health awareness, education, and research; and presenting Pittsburgh's own Working Hearts Day Campaign; and

 

WHEREAS, Working Hearts amplifies the power of its local members in the Pittsburgh region and maximizes the power of every woman to improve her own heart health through better nutrition, physical activity, screenings, and stress management;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the residents of  Allegheny County, do hereby proclaim February 2005 as Women's Heart Month in Allegheny County, during which all women and their families are urged to learn about women's heart health and the importance of heart - healthy behavior; and this Council also proclaims February 18, 2005, as Working Heart's Day, during which the women of our region are encouraged to receive free heart health screenings and education at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
