Proclamation recognizing the month of April as the "Month of the Young Child", sponsored by the Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children, and commending the early childhood professionals that provided learning activities to children and their families.

WHEREAS, the “Week of the Young Child”, first celebrated in 1971, is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and this year the Pittsburgh affiliate will expand the “Week of the Young Child” and designate the month of April as the “Month of the Young Child”; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children works to support high quality early care and education for young children through professional development, collaboration with community resources and advocacy for the needs and rights of children, their families and the individuals who work with them. Early childhood experiences lay the foundation for later learning and shape whether children succeed in school and into adulthood; and
WHEREAS, the theme of this year's event is “Building Better Futures - Watch Me Play!” and the April 2, 2006 kickoff will provide activities at sites throughout the community, including the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium; and
WHEREAS, the exhibits at the Children's Museum will include Studio, Attic, Nursery, Water Play Garage Workshop, and Theater, displaying the benefits of play for the cognitive, emotional and physical development of a child and other play activities include a museum-wide Scavenger Hunt. The Children's Museum is pleased to be a presenter of the ARTHUR exhibit, as it travels around the country, where children of all ages can appreciate how ARTHUR loves to play. Beginning with Books staff members will promote early literacy and encourage families to READ! 365 and to add to the celebration, Mayor Bob O'Connor will hold “Storytime” with the children;
